Board Evaluation PDF Print E-mail

King IV™ under Principle 9 provides that the board should ensure that the evaluation of its own performance and that of its committees, its chair and its individual members, support continued improvement in its performance and effectiveness. King IV™ recommends that the board conducts a formal performance evaluation every two years, and during the alternate year, the board should schedule in its annual work plan an opportunity to consider, reflect and discuss its performance.

An effective board evaluation exercise helps the board, committees and individual directors perform to their optimum capabilities. It has the following advantages:

  • Improves leadership/performance culture
  • Clarifies differing directors’ roles
  • Improves board communication
  • Facilitates board teamwork
  • Improves decision making processes
  • Instills accountability in board members
  • Improves efficiency of board operations
